Green America is a national nonprofit based in Washington, D.C. Since 1983 we’ve been working to create a green economy defined by environmental restoration and sustainability, social and economic justice, thriving and inclusive local communities, and personal health and well-being. We inform people’s choices, organize consumer collective action, and bring together businesses and other stakeholders to achieve system-wide change.
Our editorial interns are fully involved in the Green America editorial team. Editorial interns spend most of their time researching and writing stories, fact-checking, and proofreading listings for the National Green Pages™. Interns have the opportunity to acquire short published clips and gain exposure to many aspects of magazine publishing.
We are looking for interns with exceptional writing and editing skills, sharp analytic skills, meticulous attention to detail and factual accuracy, and familiarity with Microsoft Office and Internet research.
The Editorial Intern will help develop our two publications:
The Green American magazine covers news and events in the environmental and social change movements. Giving readers practical ideas about working toward a more peaceful and cooperative society, the magazine is organized around a central theme for each issue. Recent issues have explored cell phone safety, Fair Trade, organic and local food systems, and energy efficiency. The intern will help develop content for the upcoming issues.
Green America's National Green Pages is a directory of thousands of socially and environmentally responsible products and services. Summer interns will assist with writing and researching stories, tips, and strategies for the Green Pages magazine section, as well as with proofreading and fact-checking the directory.
An ideal candidate will:
- Be passionate about social justice and environmental sustainability.
- Be comfortable receiving editorial feedback and adhering to deadlines.
- Have a keen eye for detail.
- Have experience researching and writing with minimal supervision.
- Be ready and excited to learn.
Current college students will be given first priority in the hiring process.
To apply, please e-mail a resume, cover letter, and 2-3 short writing samples (news-style articles or essays are particularly relevant—please avoid sending academic papers if possible) to email@example.com, with the subject line "Editorial intern application." No phone calls please.
Green America is an equal opportunity employer.
