Take Back Our Food

Maintaining healthy populations of honey bees and other pollinators is essential for the future of the world’s agricultural systems and for ensuring diversity in our global food supply. The health of pollinators is directly linked to food security, as pollination services are a core component of global agricultural production. Current agriculture practices, including pesticide usage, pose a major threat to the health of pollinators.

Pollinators Are Important for Our Food

One in every three bites of food we eat depends on a crop pollinated by honey bees and other pollinators. Many of our fruits, vegetables, and nuts are reliant upon pollinators for their production. In fact, without these species, 70% of plants would be unable to reproduce or provide food.

Yet, over the past decade, we have witnessed an alarming decline in honey bee and other pollinator populations around the world. These dramatic declines are wreaking havoc for beekeepers and the farmers who rely on bees for pollination. Unfortunately, our industrial agriculture system is in many ways responsible for these crippling losses.

Pollinators Are Declining Due to Pesticide Use

Pesticides pose a number of threats to the environment;

  • The increased loss of pollinators is directly linked to pesticide use, particularly the use of neonicotinoids.
  • Surrounding wildlife is oftentimes exposed to the toxic chemicals through contaminated water. Pesticides are responsible for decreasing biodiversity, impacting habitats and food sources for a number of species, including pollinators.
  • Farmworkers and farm communities are exposed to toxic chemicals. Pesticides are linked to a rise in the number of cases of cancer and birth defects among farmworkers.
  • Ultimately, pesticides end up in the water and air. This can cause major issues for neighboring farms, downstream communities, and the environment as a whole.
