Green America: Growing the Green Economy for People and the Planet

Delaware Local Food Exchange
Wilmington, DE

The Delaware Local Food Exchange is a local food grocery store sourcing from local farmers and producers typically within about an hour's distance of our shop here in Wilmington, Delaware.

Our first criteria for purchasing our inventory is that it be sourced locally, and second that it be raised sustainably. By sustainably we mean that the items must be certified organic, organically grown or pesticide-free, grass-fed/free-range or pastured for the meats and dairy, and humanely raised and slaughtered. We carry a full line of produce, meats, dairy, bulk items such as dry goods, honey, syrup, oils, herbs, spices, teas and coffees, and cleaning products. None of the items that we sell are made with synthetic ingredients or chemicals. We highly encourage our customers to bring their own packaging for bulk items and give discounts for doing so.

In addition, we offer prepared foods to go created from our local, organic, and seasonal ingredients. These dishes are frequently created to use up any items we have in abundance or that are needing to be used so that we have less waste both of food and cost.

We also build community and self-reliance by offering regular "reskilling" classes in an effort to get folks together to learn new skills, get to know each other, and become more self-sufficient. Some of our most popular events include our bi-weekly community acunpuncture, soap-making, fermenting and canning foods, women's self defense, small home repairs, group meditation, herbal medicine making, and wild edible and medicinal walks in the park behind our store.

We are so thankful that the local and organic food movement has increased in popularity over the last few years! This has supported our goals of food security and environmental and social justice for residents in our area and for our farmers and farmland. Although we are lucky to have a hotbed of sustainable agriculture in our surrounding states, many Delaware farms have yet to catch on to organic growing so we are working hard to show them that it is a profitable and beneficial venture.

We are so flattered to be nominated for this award from Green America!

We would use our prize money to pay off credit card debt from lease improvements made by our move to our new larger location and to secure an additional day per week in a shared commercial kitchen to prepare our to-go foods as they have proven highly profitable for our store.
