Congratulations to Winter 2014
People & Planet Award winner Ecohouse!
Ecohouse helps home owners and small businesses in central Ohio to reduce their energy use and environmental impact by installing high-quality solar electric systems and performing comprehensive energy audits. Since 2008, Ecohouse has helped nearly 3000 homeowners improve the energy efficiency and comfort of their homes, and has grown to be a leading solar installer in central Ohio.
Kevin Eigel created Ecohouse as a response to his concern about climate change and global warming. As a long-time member and former Board President of Simply Living of Central Ohio, Kevin believes in the importance of “being the change we seek for the world,” right here and right now. For Kevin, a reduction of our carbon footprint is the most important change.
Kevin has had a long-time commitment to sustainability. He operated an organic farm for 10 years, designed and built a super-energy-efficient, solar-powered home, and is an avid gardener, composter and recycler. This commitment to sustainability is the inspiration for Ecohouse and its operations. Ecohouse is helping to reduce the use of fossil fuel, one house and one business at a time, by installing solar PV systems, making buildings more airtight and better insulated, and encouraging the use of energy efficient furnaces, appliances and lighting.
Ecohouse is also actively engaged in educating its customers and the general public about the details of energy efficiency and renewable energy. For the last six years, Ecohouse has participated in the Ohio Solar Tour, sponsored by Green Energy Ohio, and has conducted other educational activities to spread the word that solar and energy efficiency make sense economically and environmentally today. Ecohouse works to make it easy for its customers to save energy and install solar, by taking care of the many complex details.
Ecohouse is active in a number of organizations that support local green business, including Green Energy Ohio, Simply Living, the SOLE (Support Our Local Economy) coalition and the SBB (Small Business Beanstalk). If Ecohouse wins, the prize money will go toward establishing a fund to help local non-profits install solar electric systems. The first project will be the installation of a solar electric system for Third Hand Bike Co-op, which promotes cycling as safe and environmentally responsible transportation in Central Ohio.
We know the challenges to change are tremendous. By working together on renewable energy and energy efficiency, we can make a difference in our communities for the future.
