Green America: Growing the Green Economy for People and the Planet

Technicians for Sustainability
Tucson, AZ

At Technicians For Sustainability, we strive to help businesses and homeowners translate their environmental values into a practical reality. Based in Tucson, AZ, we install high-quality, clean solar electric and solar hot water systems that are built to last. Our goal is to ensure that Southern Arizona’s natural resources are used efficiently and with respect for present and future needs. Committed to practicing what we preach, we live with the systems we install, make fuel-efficient transportation choices, and whenever possible, work with companies that hold comparable values, standards, and ethics.

TFS is a locally owned business that has installed over 9 megawatts (MW) of solar in Southern Arizona since 2003. Through a variety of unique financing programs, we have provided energy solutions to non-profits and local businesses, including the Southern Arizona Nature Conservancy offices, many houses of worship, Bookman’s Sports Exchange, Brooklyn Pizza, and Antigone Books.  We have also helped over 1,000 homeowners incorporate renewable energy into their homes and lifestyles.

As a company and as individuals, we strive to walk our talk.  Our downtown Tucson office generates electricity with a 5 kW photovoltaic array, and we place priority on local, and socially and environmentally responsible products and vendors, from paper products to work uniforms to web designers.

The majority of our employees bike to work, creating a company culture that values cycling for its health and environmental benefits.  We also aim to have a fuel-efficient fleet that includes customized bicycles and trailers, hybrid and all electric vehicles, and the most fuel-efficient trucks available for the job.

Strengthening our connection to the local community, we work with schools and community organizations to implement education programs, provide internships, sponsor several non-profit groups, and offer a variety of giving programs for nonprofits.  Additionally, through a Solar Grant Program, we have provided seven local nonprofits with solar energy systems, allowing them to reduce their expenditures and redirect funds toward supporting their own causes.

If we are selected to receive the Green Business People & Planet award, the $5,000 would be invested directly in our employees through training and implementation of open book management systems, and facilitating a shift to an employee ownership model. Each program would increase the financial literacy of employees, offering higher participation and ownership of company success.
