Green America: Growing the Green Economy for People and the Planet

The Hub Bike Co-op
Minneapolis, MN

The Hub Bike Co-op is a full-service, worker-owned cooperative bicycle shop founded in 2002, with four locations serving South Minneapolis and the University of Minnesota. Our staff is made up of a collection of 18 Worker Owners and roughly 45 employees, representing a diverse range of communities and identities, working together with a shared mission: providing “All types of bikes for all types of people.”

The Hub is committed to making cycling accessible for everyone, offering a wide range of classes, community-oriented events and social justice services. We teach free classes on commuting and basic bike maintenance on a weekly basis, along with regular open-shop opportunities and a dedicated Do-it-Yourself room to empower our customers. We partner with Grease Rag, a Women/Trans/Femme organization to hold seminars and open-shop events  specifically focused on removing barriers for underserved cycling communities. The Hub is also an official partner of the Nice Ride Orange Bike program, a city-sponsored initiative providing free bikes and repairs for the Minneapolis’ Native American community within the Little Earth neighborhood.

Our cooperative strives to be environmentally conscious in all of our business decisions, utilizing recycled and sustainable building materials whenever possible and emphasizing pre-owned bicycles and components with our yearly Used Bike Extravaganza. We transfer our stock and supplies via cargo bicycle to fight carbon emissions, and still haven’t had to purchase a company vehicle during our 13 years of business.

The Hub is also a co-founder of Spokes-Bike Walk Connect along with Minnesota non-profit Cycles for Change. Spokes is a community bike repair shop that utilizes 90% used and donated parts and offers crucial community services such as a comprehensive earn-a-bike program, a bike library, and multiple weekly open-shop opportunities along with youth and adult riding classes.

Most importantly, The Hub is a community of people that love bikes, and want to share the joy that two wheels can provide with as many folks as we can. We hope you’ll join us!
