As 2012 draws to a close, we wanted to celebrate our new People & Planet Awards contest by interviewing Penny Bauder, a member of our Green Business Network who also was one of our first award-winners this summer. Also, Penny is offering a special discount for Green Americans through 12/10/12. See below for details, and for the rest of Penny's interview...

Green Kid

Green America: What does your business do, and what is your most popular product?

Penny Bauder: Green Kid Crafts subscription service brings children closer to their environment through fun and creative activities that show people of all ages that taking care of the environment and each other can be a factor in everything they do.

Subscribers to Green Kid Crafts receive monthly deliveries of three fun, eco-friendly arts, crafts, and science activities that spark creativity and cultivate respect and love for the environment. The activities are connected by a different theme each month and cover various developmental areas through art, science, and imaginative and active play.

We are grandparent-, uncle-, and aunt-friendly. We offer different types of subscriptions to fit any budget.

What makes Green Kid Crafts a green business?

Green Kid

Penny: In keeping with the values of our purpose-driven company, all materials are eco-friendly and nontoxic. We offset 100% of the carbon dioxide generated by our business and help fund the development of renewable energy projects across the US. We also give back. A minimum if 1% of sales is donated to environmental organizations through our membership in 1% for the Planet.

What did you do before you started your own green business?

Penny: I started Green Kid Crafts as sort of a hobby and a way to stay at home with my children while continuing to work and participate in the world. But I quickly discovered that through Green Kid Crafts, I was able to marry my deep environmental ethics with creativity and share this experience with not only my kids, but also with kids around the country. This I find deeply fulfilling.

What has been your proudest moment as a green business owner?

Penny: Green Kid Crafts has a lot to celebrate recently! We have a large subscriber base that is growing rapidly. We have an extremely active social media following and just reached the 1.5M mark on Pinterest! We have received a lot of buzz in the blogging world and have 200+ great online reviews under our belt. We are also proud to have won Green America’s People & Planet Award!

What's the next green step you're working on right now?

Penny: We are further developing and refining our product lines and will be adding staff capacity. We are in the process of looking for partners and a seed investment to scale the company.

We are so excited to offer fellow Green America supporters an exclusive savings until 12/10/12.  PLUS, for each subscription purchased, Green Kid Crafts will make a donation to Green America, up to $25 per subscription!
