Green America is pleased to Announce its
Green Grants awards to be provided to local projects across the United States.

Green America will provide the following AWARDS: Grand Prize (1) : $2,500 (USD) provided to the winner in the form of a check. First Prizes (3): $1,000 (USD) provided to each of the winners in the form of a check. Award winners agree that the prize money will be used to support the project nominated for the Green Grant. The award winners agree to work with Green America to publicize the awards and to publicize the use of the awards in carrying out their projects.

ELIGIBILITY: Green America is looking for a broad array of prize winners which exemplify locally-based green projects, which combine elements of social and economic justice and community and environmental health. To be eligible for Green Grants, winners must be residents , non-profit organizations, businesses , entities , or other organizations located anywhere in the United States . Residents must be 18 years of age or older (or a parent or legal guardian must accept the award on behalf of a resident under the age of 18). Employees (and their immediate families (parent, child, spouse or sibling and their respective spouses, regardless of where they reside) and those living in their same households, whether or not related) of Green America, are not eligible to be nominated or win.

All nominations must be received by 11:59 p.m. ET on May 31, 2011 to be eligible. All nominations become the property of Green America, and due to volume, may not be acknowledged or returned.

VOTING: Green America will determine which nominated projects will be eligible for the final round of voting, and will allow any member of the public to register and vote. Public voting will be an important factor in selecting the final winners. Upon completion of voting, Green America will select winners based on voting results, as well as evaluating which projects best support Green America’s eligibility criteria – locally-based projects exemplifying green in its full, holistic definition of including social and economic justice and community and environmental health.

WINNER NOTIFICATION: Winner(s) will be notified by e-mail and by US mail and will need to sign and return their Award packet in order to receive their award.

General Conditions: Please note that Green America will make every attempt to receive and process all nominations and subsequent votes, but is not responsible for any lost nominations or votes.

Winners’ NAMES: Will be announced by Green America in a press release, and will be available on its website in late-July/early-August, or thereabouts. Green America may also promote the winners and their projects through other venues, including its publications.

What is the green grants contest?

The green grants contest is designed to give a boost to the green economy.  We want to draw attention to projects that are doing a great job of combining social justice with environmental responsibility, and reward them with a grant toward their work.

What kind of groups are eligible?

If the project is good for both people and the planet and a $1,000 or $2,500 grant could make a difference to them – you should nominate the group. The group is not required to be a nonprofit organization or have 501c(3) status.

Will you be contacting my nominee?

If your nominee makes it into our top-ten, we will contact them to let them know.  We'll work with the ten nominees to get a full description of their projects on our Web site for the round of top-ten voting.

What kind of projects are you talking about?

Here are some examples:  Maybe a local school could use a green-grant for its organic garden project.  Maybe a local pro-bicycling non-profit organization wants to extend its reach into the inner city.   Maybe a local solar-installation business wants to make a commitment to provide job-training.  Really, we're looking forward to seeing what you report to us.  We're excited about publicizing good news about the green economy and rewarding good green projects.

When will the grants be given?

The nomination period runs through June 7.  The top-ten voting runs through June 30.  We'll publicize the winners and disburse the grants shortly after that.  We'll also keep up with the winners and profile the great ways that they use their "green grants."

How else will the nominees benefit?

We'll list all the nominees (not just the top ten) on our Web site with links to their work.  This will become an honor roll of organizations doing great green work in their communities, bringing together social justice and environmental health.  People from all over the country will see their work and have an opportunity to link to it.

How are the top ten nominees chosen?

Top ten nominees will be chosen by Green America staff.

How are the green grants funded?

A generous Green America donor provides these funds for us to disburse to other groups as we see fit. This year, we decided to invite you to help us decide who receives these grants.

How can I find out who won?
