Fair Trade

Economic action to create a just global economy for farmers and artisans

Fair Trade at Your Supermarket

A few supermarkets carry a handful of Fair Trade offerings. But more needs to be done to increase markets for Fair Trade farmers and artisans. And you and members of your community have the clout to make a difference.

Green America is linking up Fair Trade advocates with stores in their local communities to keep pressure on supermarkets to carry and promote more Fair Trade products.

Download our ADOPT-A-SUPERMARKET Campaign Guide now.

We show you how to form an adoption team, how to talk to store managers, and how to get your communty excited about Fair Trade.

Green America's Adopt-a-Supermarket Campaign has been an overwhelming success. In 2006, more than 250 teams adopted supermarkets all over the US and even in Kenya, Algeria, Italy, and the Czech Republic. We will no longer be posting new teams but please follow these steps to promote Fair Trade in your community:

1. Adopt-a-Supermarket for at Least One Year. To increase your impact and fund, form an Adoption Team with your school, workplace, faith congregation, or community group. Use our campaign guide to help you get started. Download now.

2. Make Regular Store Visits. With your team, go on a regular basis to speak to the store manager and ask for an increase in Fair Trade product availability. Plus, each and every time you shop, you can fill out customer comment cards and ask for more Fair Trade products.

3. Get Your Community Involved. Host a petition drive. Hold educational events. Make it fun and reach out to all sectors of your community.

Check out the list of addresses for major supermarket chains around the country. Use this list to help with your letter writing campaigns in your community.
