• Critics questioned Diageo’s chief executive Paul Walsh’s role as the European chair of the International Business Leaders Forum, an organization which promotes using business to create a “sustainable and equitable world.” Walsh’s actions in Diageo do not reflect this philosophy. In 2009 the company decided to cut around 900 jobs and completely close two plants. A decision experts believe will bring financial ruin to the impacted communities. Despite these cuts, in 2008 Walsh received a annual salary of 2.3 million British Pounds.

• The CSR department of Diageo is working to make sure that their business does not support human rights violations. Currently, Diageo operates out of over 180 countries many of which have human rights violations including: Kenya, Tanzania, Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Brazil, Ghana, Russia, Turkey, the Ivory Coast, and India. To make sure Diageo does not play a part in these violations, the CSR department of Diageo created a human rights policy with the help of Amnesty International. Diageo feels the best way they can promote change is to create breweries in these countries that can provide good jobs.
