Because it does not have any employee training or management guideliens on gay rights, a lack of benefits for transgendered employees and no gender identity policy, Humana scored 45 out of 100 on the 2010 Buying for Equality Guide completed by the Human Rights Campaign. This placed it on the last tier, in the category of companies to not support.

In 2002, Humana denied a young man a Heart transplant that could have saved his life. The surgery would have cost Humana a half a million dollars, and thus Humana figured its way out of paying for the surgery resulting in the young man’s death. The doctor who would have performed the surgery is now working for a medical ethics program.
