  • Biodegradable ingredients– best if certified by Scientific Certification Systems or Biodegradable
  • Scented with natural essential oils or clear indication of synthetic fragrances at minimum
  • Chlorine-free
  • No animal testing
  • If plant based surfactants used, explanation of what plants they are derived from in ingredients
  • Plant based surfactants may not be derived from GMO feedstocks, e.g. corn, beet sugar or soy
  • Non-toxic ingredients – watch for following ingredients:
    • Ammonium Hydroxide (corrosive, irritant)
    • Chlorine bleach (potentially fatal if ingested, number one cause of poisonings in children)
    • Formaldehyde (highly toxic; known carcinogen)
    • Hydrochloric acid (corrosive, eye and skin irritant)
    • Hydrochloric bleach (eye, skin and respiratory tract irritant)
    • Propylene Glycol (immunogen; main ingredient in antifreeze)


  • Use of a green office or facility, including resource reuse and maximum use of post-consumer recycled resources as well as maximum water and energy efficiency This includes storm water management if companies have access to the exterior of their buildings or property.
  • Non-toxic ingredients – watch for following ingredients:
    • Packaging made with post-consumer recycled plastic or paper
    • Take packaging back for refill

Social & Economic Justice

  • List all ingredients on packaging and website; if proprietary, at least MSD sheets offered
  • Social and environmental mission and vision statement for business on its website
  • Offer unscented or fragrance-free, essential oil options
