Green America: Growing the Green Economy for People and the Planet

Green Halloween

The healthy, eek-o-friendly, and fun halloween revolution

Green Halloween® is a grassroots community initiative to create healthier and more Earth-friendly holidays, starting with Halloween.  Green Halloween and its sister program, National Costume Swap Day™, became programs of Green America in 2012.  To learn more about Green Halloween, and how it all got started, read our story.

This October we will be helping families across the US replace the junk with healthier and more sustainable halloween treats, and also to swap gently used costumes within their community – a green and affordable way to celebrate!

Get Involved:

Host a Costume Swap in your community – National Costume Swap Day is October 13th, but you can choose to hold a swap on any day that works for you.  Find tips on how to organize and promote your costume swap here.  Also, be sure to register your swap so that others in your area will know the details.

Attend a Green Halloween Celebration – We have officially teamed up with AZA Zoos and Aquariums, and some community partners across the US, to host Green Halloween celebrations.  Activities at these events will vary from trick-or-treating, to face-painting, to hay rides, but ALL are perfect for kids of all ages and will include healthy treats from our sponsors such as Honest Tea, Lara Bar and others. See a complete event listing here.

Organize a Green Halloween event in your area – Anyone can organize a Green Halloween celebration in their town.  For tons of tips on how to organize fun, green activities visit our website and download the "Volunteer Coordinator's Guide".

Hand out Green treats and Treasures to your trick-or-treaterswe've come up with dozens of alternatives to conventional candy, from organic candy to stickers. Here's a complete list. Also, all of Green Halloween's sponsors offer great options! Visit Honest Tea, LaraBar, Stretch Island Fruit Company, Endangered Species Chocolate, Plum Organics, Apple Gate, Cascadian Farms, Surf Sweets, Bitsy's Brainfood, Brainard's Natural Remedies, Mr. Ellie Pooh, and Glee Gum for more ideas.
