Our Mission - RainThanks & Greywater’s mission is to create a regenerative water culture by reusing, capturing and conserving water.

Our Vision - Our vision is for every building owner to divert his or her greywater and rainwater to the landscape to grow food.

Our Practice - RainThanks & Greywater is a woman-owned, socially responsible enterprise providing a living wage for our workers. We teach workshops in the community and have donated systems to non-profits groups so the public can learn and see, how to save water.
Reusing laundry and shower greywater is a simple solution with a big payback. Unfortunately, the niche of greywater reuse is still in its infancy and there are few resources to help property owners implement a system. Candace Vanderhoff, licensed architect and founder of RainThanks & Greywater saw this as an opportunity to serve the community and began design and installing systems throughout San Diego.

When Candace moved from Michigan to San Diego and learned that 85% of the region’s water was imported from 400 miles away, she immediately founded RainThanks & Greywater. The company installs systems that divert laundry and shower greywater to fruit trees, herbs and pollinator gardens. To showcase how these systems are integrated into the urban landscape, Candace opens her homestead for workshops and tours to show how fruit trees, herbs, berries and a native bee garden can be created from free, abundant greywater. A key feature is the sunken rain garden where rainwater seeps into the ground, recharging the aquifer instead of flowing to the ocean.

One of the key values of the company is to make plumbing beautiful,  “if it is not beautiful, people will not do it” is our motto. So, to bring everyone on board, we strive to make all our systems beautiful, simple, low-tech and require minimal maintenance.

Since 2009, we have installed over 250 systems; presented to schools, garden clubs, festivals and prisons. Along with installing systems we have also pioneered the greywater permitting process in several municipalities. With streamlined codes and processes, more officials are welcoming greywater systems. To bring greywater to a broader audience RainThanks & Greywater is developing a new DIY system that will allow homeowners and handy-people to easily install their own greywater system.

Use of Funds: We are excited to bring our DIY greywater kit to the market so homeowners can install their own system, this grant will help us do that.
